This week, during school break, I was able to meet up with Suzanna Carter. Teaching is hard, but learing about her difficulties, I have learnt that we can get through anything as long as we create a healthy support system around us.
From a young age, Suzanna always knew she wanted to become a primary school teacher. The idea of inspiring young minds and creating a safe, encouraging environment for children was a calling she could not ignore. However, her journey was not without its obstacles. For years, she battled endometriosis, a chronic and painful condition that made her dream of standing in front of a classroom feel like a distant reality.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside of it, causing chronic pain, inflammation, and sometimes fertility issues. Women who have this condition experience intense pain, especially during menstruation, but it can affect other parts of the body as well. For Suzanna, the pain was unpredictable, often leaving her unable to function during flare-ups.
The daily struggle with endometriosis meant missing classes, canceling meetings, and, at times, being bedridden with pain. Her body’s demands clashed with her ambition to become an educator, leaving her to question if she could ever truly balance both.
Though the pain was overwhelming at times, Suzanna never lost sight of her goal. She found solace in a strong support system—her family, close friends, her faith in God and a network of teachers who understood her struggle. In addition to managing her physical health with medications and alternative treatments, Suzanna learned to pace herself, prioritising self-care, mental wellness and prayer.
Having faced adversity herself, Suzanna understood the importance of compassion and empathy in the classroom. She believed that by sharing her experiences, she could help create a supportive environment for students facing their own challenges—whether it be illness, learning difficulties, or emotional support.
This year, Suzanna is nearing the completion of her degree. Though endometriosis still presents daily challenges, she is determined to become the teacher she has always aspired to be. With the support of her family, healthcare professionals, and her unwavering faith in God, she’s proving that no dream is too far out of reach—even with a chronic illness.
Suzanna's life is a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity. Her journey is far from over, but one thing is certain—her determination to teach and inspire others will never be overshadowed by the challenges of living with endometriosis. She serves as an inspiration to anyone fighting their own battles while chasing their dreams.
Thank you, Suzanna for sharing such personal details about your life. You are going to be such an amazing teacher...watch this space!
